Geriatric MedicineOverview Geriatrics is a specialty within the practice of primary care that deals with the promotion of the optimal health, function and well-being of elderly people. Geriatrics is now taught in all medical schools and is a required rotation for all medical residents. It has gained recent interest due to the growing percentage of the elderly. In 1994, one in eight Americans were aged 65 or older and by the year 2030 is it predicted that one in five Americans will fall into this age group; the number of people aged 65 and above is expected to double in next century. Not only are we living longer, but we are also becoming healthier.. |
