Orthopedics

Orthopedic Expertise from Head to Toe

Our comprehensive services cover the full range of orthopedic care, from prevention and diagnostics, to treatment and rehabilitation. They also cover emergency trauma surgery in our Emergency Department. Whenever possible, our experts turn to non-invasive treatments first. The physiatrists on our orthopedic team are well versed in the latest pain management modalities, including medication, physical therapy, and non-operative treatments. Our surgeons excel at sophisticated minimally invasive techniques. When total joint replacement is the best solution, qualified patients have the option of scheduling a same-day procedure, avoiding the need to spend the night in the Medical Center. We also have a specialized Spine & Brain program offering complex orthopedic and neurological spine care. In addition to caring for adults, our providers treat children ages two and older.

Our Team

Our team is exceptionally collaborative and includes board-certified surgeons, along with specialized radiologists, physiatrists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, case management, and orthopedic and spine navigators.

In the summer of 2021, MarinHealth and UCSF Health expanded our strategic alliance to add academic and clinical expertise to MarinHealth’s already robust orthopedic and sports medicine programs. With the addition of UCSF Health surgeons and providers, our capabilities cover almost all orthopedic specialties and subspecialties.

Highly ranked by US News and World Report, UCSF Medical Center's orthopedic program is known for expertise in leading-edge treatments and complex surgeries. Our collaboration with UCSF provides our MarinHealth patients with local access to the latest research and technologies, including potential enrollment in UCSF clinical trials for those who meet the criteria.

Surgical Expertise

Our orthopedic surgeons operate in the state-of-the-art surgical suites at MarinHealth Medical Center’s new Oak Pavilion. We perform the full range of orthopedic surgeries, including:

All joint replacement patients are encouraged to attend our complimentary Total Joint Class. This class helps prepare our patients for surgery by educating them about their procedure. Community members seeking information on joint replacement surgery are also welcome to attend.

Innovation & Technology

Delivering high-quality care, along with focusing on your safety and comfort, are our top priorities. We are always looking to refine and streamline procedures and acquire the most advanced technologies.

  • We offer the most advanced robotic option for knee replacement surgery, the DePuy Synthes' VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution. This breakthrough technology allows surgeons to operate with exceptional visibility and accuracy. Surgeons can literally visualize and predict joint stability in real time, customizing the knee to the patient’s anatomy for excellent outcomes.

  • We use VELYS JointPoint Hip Navigation for anterior hip replacements. This software program allows surgeons to record and analyze the anatomy of the patient’s natural hip both visually and mathematically, based on angles and leg length. This helps our experts create a pre-operative template for the most precise fit. During the hip replacement procedure, the program compares preoperative imaging to imaging taken in real time to finetune positioning of the implant.

  • We have multiple operating rooms available for our orthopedic-surgery patients.

  • Our hip specialists perform anterior hip replacement using real-time C-arm imaging and navigation.

  • We offer a wide variety of sophisticated, minimally invasive spine surgeries, including cervical disc replacement with the revolutionary Prestige® prosthetic disc that preserves motion in the neck.

  • Our Hana® operating platform is specially designed for anterior hip replacements.

  • During surgery, we use the Aquamantys™ System to seal blood vessels in soft tissue and bone. This technology helps prevent blood loss, pain, and swelling, and reduces the number of patients requiring transfusion.

Innovative Approaches to Anesthesia

  • Multimodal Pain Management
Postoperative pain can slow down the recovery processand the important use of a new joint. We are one of the few hospitals in the Bay Area to offer multimodal pain management for orthopedic surgeries. This technique combines a cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 inhibitor, a COX-2 inhibitor, and an opioid to control pain on three different levels in the brain. We start pain relief before the patient even goes into the OR, to prepare the body for pain.

  • Spinal Anesthetic for Hip Replacements
The amount of general anesthesia required for hip replacement surgery can be reduced by using a spinal anesthetic.

  • Continuous Nerve Block for Knee Replacement
We administer a continuous nerve block during and up to two days after a knee replacement. This reduces the amount of general anesthesia needed to perform the surgery and makes the initial stages of recovery less painful.
