Meet the Physicians

Barbara Finzen, MD

Specialty: Internal Medicine

Dr Barbara Finzen is a Board-Certified physician in Internal Medicine. She sees a spectrum of patients, from late adolescence through geriatrics. Her special interests include preventive medicine and geriatric medicine.

She attended Northwestern University on a National Merit Scholarship, and after graduating Phi Beta Kappa in an Honors’ three year degree program, she returned to her home city of Milwaukee to attend the Medical College of Wisconsin. She came to California in 1980 to do her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco. Dr Finzen was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians, and inducted into fellowship in a convocation ceremony at the national meeting of the College in San Francisco, CA in April 2013.

She has resided in Marin County since 1984. She has three grown children and enjoys hiking, tennis, and traveling with her husband.


Elizabeth Etemad, DO

Specialty: Family Medicine

Dr. Etemad is a graduate of Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, California. She holds an undergraduate degree is in Biology from Union College in Schenectady, New York.

After medical school, she did a rotating internship at San Bernardino County Medical Center. She moved to Michigan to complete her family medicine residency at Wayne State University in Detroit and since her return to California has been practicing family medicine in Sonoma and Marin counties.

She learned to speak Spanish as a high school exchange student to Panama. Areas of particular interest to her are women and children’s health, sports medicine, and adolescent medicine. She is skilled in osteopathic manual medicine.


Sarah Lowenthal, MD

Specialty: Family Medicine

Dr. Lowenthal is board certified in Family Medicine, received her medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed her residency at UCSF where she was elected chief resident. Before moving to Marin, she practiced in Oakland where she was named one of Oakland Magazine’s “Best Doctors”.

Dr. Lowenthal believes in caring for her patients as whole people, addressing not only their physical health, but also their psychological, social, and spiritual wellbeing. While she enjoys many areas of primary care, she has a special interest and expertise in the treatment of eating disorders in adults and adolescents. Prior to joining Prima, she owned a practice in Mill Valley specializing in the treatment of eating disorders and also practiced with the Carlton Clinic for Eating-Related Disorders in Mountain View, CA. She is currently the Medical Liaison for the Bay Area Chapter of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) and serves as a medical consultant for the Bay Area Eating Disorder Associates.

Dr. Lowenthal lives in Marin with her husband, Fred. She is a Certified Yoga Instructor and avid yogi who loves being outdoors, drawing, crafting, cooking and reading.


Tomas Kubrican, M.D., M.S.

Specialty: Family Medicine

Tomas Kubrican, MD earned his medical degree at Comenius University, Martin, Slovak Republic. After relocating to the United States, Dr. Kubrican earned a Master of Science degree from Marquette University.

He accepted a position with Aurora Healthcare in Milwaukee, where he practiced family medicine and obstetrics. Dr. Kubrican was also an attending physician for family medicine residents and has been active in mentoring medical students.

Dr. Kubrican’s scope of practice includes the management of common, acute and chronic conditions in patients of all ages. He performs multiple small procedures in-office. Dr Kubrican is dedicated to providing a high level of care in Marin County, while working closely with patients to achieve their health goals.
